History: Beyond the Books
Foreword
Hello and welcome to History: Beyond the Books! New for the 2023/24 academic year, we are a student-led platform that aims to bring our History community together with shared stories and experiences of living and studying in Sheffield.
With the idea of community building as our core focus, we aim to collect contributions from students, for students, all studying History at Sheffield, whether on its own or alongside another course.
This blog is therefore a place where each and every History student can feel welcome to share their experiences or simply to read what others have to say, to feel a sense of community and connection with others across our department.
This means that you don’t need to treat your contribution like an essay, with references or word counts. As with New Histories, our department historical magazine, you can tell the stories you want, in the way you want!
Each month there are certain themes we will look to cover - for example, in November, Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month is a focus. There will also occasionally be specific dates over the year where we might look for a contribution, for example for International Women’s Day on 8 March.
Although we have these chosen themes we aim to touch on over the year, we are also very much open to any contribution you feel fits into the topic of community building. Here are some ideas to get you thinking -
Sheffield’s hidden gems/favourite places
Settling into university life and the pressure to fit in
Managing time/maintaining work-life balance as a distance learner or commuter student
Experience as an international student within the department and the wider university/city
Studying as a parent
Just to name a few! Feel free to submit any favourite Sheffield stops, tips or tricks you want to share with the community, and we will let you know if your submission is successful as well as when it will be published. Contributions will generally be added on a rolling basis throughout the year.
You can find all of the details on what we look to publish and when on our Resources for contributors section.
Please use this form to upload submissions.
We look forward to reading your contributions!
